Business Events Sarawak (BESarawak) organised the second installation of BESarawak – Tribal Gathering today in Sibu in conjunction with the officiation of the Business Events Consortium of Sibu (BECoS) formation and launching of the “I Want to Discover Sarawak” contest as part of the international Redefining Global Tribe (RGT) campaign.
The gathering is an affirmation of BESarawak’s inclusive strategy to expand the Business Events capabilities of other cities within Sarawak with Sibu as its starting point. Sibu is one of the strongest cities for shipping, timber, palm oil and engineering which forms an integral part in the development of nations. At the same time, the Sarawak Government is in the midst of developing the tourism, agriculture and education sector for Sibu that is aligned with Sarawak’s 7 Key Focus Areas namely Urban Development/Redevelopment, Social, Environmental, Agricultural and Industrial Development plus Service Industry and Digital Economy.
This move by BESarawak will enable the industry partners and players in Sibu to develop opportunities to broaden their opportunities in the industry. BECoS will advocate and promote Sibu’s abilities to host conferences, act as a catalyst for newfound conferences and to capitalise on its current influence as an industry-based heavyweight within the region.
The Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth & Sports Sarawak emphasised on Sibu’s capacity to become the next business-tourism hub, “It is a very promising destination for business events and tourism to merge, being a relatively new place for business events. We must realise this to raise awareness on Sibu and its capabilities to not just become the next Business Events destination, but also the next place for tourism.”
BESarawak Chairman, Tan Sri Dato Sri Dr. Muhammad Leo Toyad Abdullah is certain that Sibu is the answer to some of the world’s current major sectors, “These sectors (shipping, timber, palm oil and engineering) are highly influential in Asia, Europe, the Middle East and beyond therefore, in business events, the possibilities are endless”.
The Business Events industry is now looking into the legacy impacts of meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions to enhance the socio-economic climate of Sarawak. An innovative study on hosting conventions in Sarawak has been commissioned by BESarawak with consultancy group GainingEdge and 2 major universities which take a look at the various intangible benefits that is brought by the 10 participating conferences. At the same time, BESarawak is diversifying the return of investment from Business Events to tourism impact through the ‘I Want to Discover Sarawak” contest in collaboration with Sarawak Tourism Board (STB).
